Spring, 2007 marked completion of our 15th home on Rauber Street, located within the city of Rochester's "crescent of poverty." Over a six-year period, Flower City Habitat built 3 and 4 bedroom homes on this one-way street located one block south of Hoeltzer Street and across Joseph Avenue from Cuba Place in the Upper Falls neighborhood.

When Flower City Habitat for Humanity arrived there in summer 2001 to begin construction of twelve new homes, we found abandoned houses, vacant lots and drug dealing. For several decades a small group of renters and homeowners watched their neighborhood slide into devastation. These neighbors eagerly welcomed us and have been on the lookout for thieves who prowl our construction sites. Our construction and influx of new homeowner families have brought about changes and signs of renewed hope. With Cuba Place just a block away, the homeowners of Rauber Street are confident that a new Rauber Street will be born.

Our work on Rauber Street has included some unique partnerships, sponsorships and special events. Our first Rochester Leaders Build in August 2001 attracted over 100 corporate presidents and CEO's to sample the Habitat house construction experience and observe first-hand how our efforts bring about neighborhood revitalization. In October of that year, 84 Lumber, one of our key suppliers, led a special house blitz build in 84 hours. Also in fall 2001, both U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton participated in the nationwide Houses the Senate Built program. Other house sponsors have include Eastman Kodak Company, Rush-Henrietta Interfaith League, Penfield Churches, Citibank, Excellus, Citigroup, Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation, Greece Churches, United We Build, M&T Bank, Brighton Churches, High Falls Brewing, BiblioBuild, William Mercer and the Hartley School.  In June, 2006 we participated in Habitat for Humanity's nationwide week-long Home Builders' Blitz with Ryan Homes as our local sponsor.

During our second annual Rochester Leaders Build in August of 2002, it was easy to see improvement on the street since construction work began there the previous year. Fewer vehicles were speeding down this narrow, one-way street and established residents were getting to know their new Flower City Habitat neighbors. We observed a developing sense of stability, community, and neighborhood.
