Flower City Habitat's A Brush With Kindness Program
A Brush With Kindness is part of Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization (NR). Through this program Flower City Habitat does exterior work for low-income families that include painting, patching, minor repair, landscaping or replacement of materials for the purpose of maintaining good or sound condition. The mission of NR is to serve more families by responding to community aspirations with an expanded array of products, services and partnerships, empowering residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life.
Example projects include
- Exterior scraping, caulking, and painting
- Window repair (new screens, glass, glazing)
- Minor siding and trim repair
- Minor roof repair and soffit or fascia replacement
- Board replacement in porch, stair, or ramp
- Door replacement
- Landscaping (pruning, trimming, weeding, and reseeding)
- Clean-up, brush/junk removal
- Weather stripping
How It Works
A Brush With Kindness partner families meet the same three foundational principals as other Habitat for Humanity families: the need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay a no-profit mortgage or loan, and a willingness to partner with Flower City Habitat. A Brush With Kindness partner families are provided a "hand-up not a hand out" through this program; partner families repay a no-profit loan for improvements which goes back to help fund Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization program and they contribute sweat equity hours to the repair, Flower City Habitat, or the neighborhood in which they reside.
