Flower City Habitat's Critical Repair Program
Critical Repair is part of Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) program. The Critical Repair Program includes extensive interior and exterior work preformed to alleviate critical health, life, and safety issues on homes of low-income families. Critical Home Repair includes fixing code violations, including a change to or repair of materials or components; a reconfiguration of space; a modification for accessibility; installation or extension of plumbing, mechanical or electrical systems on an existing structure The mission of NR is to serve more families by responding to community aspirations with an expanded array of products, services and partnerships, empowering residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life.
Example projects include
- Interior and exterior work necessary to maintain the home
- Window replacement
- Extensive siding and trim repair or replacement
- Major roof repair or replacement
- Wheelchair ramp construction (also see our Aging in Place program)
- Installation or extension of house systems (heating, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
- Floor and wall repair/replacement

* Note that painting is not considered a Critical Home Repair. For painting assistance, please see A Brush With Kindness.
How It Works
Critical Home Repair partner families meet the same three foundational principals as other Habitat for Humanity families: the need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay a no-profit mortgage or loan, and a willingness to partner with Flower City Habitat. Critical Home Repair partner families are provided a "hand-up not a hand out" through this program; partner families repay a no-profit loan for improvements which goes back to help fund Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization program and they contribute sweat equity hours to the repair, Flower City Habitat, or the neighborhood in which they reside.
How To Apply
We are currently accepting applications for the Aging in Place component of Critical Home Repair, specifically exterior accessibility ramps only. For more information on Aging in Place, please click here or call (585) 546-1470 for additional questions.
