Flower City Habitat's Weatherization Program
Weatherization is part of Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) program. The Weatherization Program is designed to improve the energy efficiency and overall indoor air quality and comfort of a low-income family's home. Weatherization is a systematic repair process to an existing home based on a comprehensive energy audit, resulting in a defined scope of work. The mission of NR is to serve more families by responding to community aspirations with an expanded array of products, services and partnerships, empowering residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life.
Example projects include
- Interior and exterior work
- Replacement of windows and doors
- Caulking/foaming cracks and gaps
- Insulating openings, attics, crawl spaces, etc.
- Minor repairs to ventilation systems
- Adding or replacing door seals
- Insulating pipes and duct work; wrapping water heaters
- Applying insulation to walls
- Energy audits before and after work
How It Works
Weatherization partner families meet the same three foundational principals as other Habitat for Humanity families: the need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay a no-profit mortgage or loan, and a willingness to partner with Flower City Habitat. Weatherization partner families are provided a "hand-up not a hand out" through this program; partner families repay a no-profit loan for improvements which goes back to help fund Flower City Habitat's Neighborhood Revitalization program and they contribute sweat equity hours to the repair, Flower City Habitat, or the neighborhood in which they reside.
