Schoolchildren and Educators Build Houses and Hope

2003 School HouseBuild Logo Flower City Habitat for Humanity has begun construction of its 125th house in Rochester: our second School HouseBuild! Click here for news and stories in our construction diary.

You Can Help!

Thousands of school-aged youth and their teachers from throughout Monroe County have already joined Habitat to sponsor the construction of a home in the inner city, in partnership with volunteers and families -- but more are needed! The project raises awareness of the need for decent, affordable housing and the importance of home ownership for low-income families. Students can get involved through fundraising, classroom projects, and activities related to housing and homelessness. Teachers, high school seniors, and other members of the school community can be construction volunteers as well. Click here for a list of participants.

Visit the Site

Click for Map Field trips to the construction site are welcome. In addition, teachers can use the School HouseBuild project as a springboard for a wide variety of learning opportunities:

  • classroom activities in math and social studies
  • encouraging creative expression
  • building an understanding of good citizenship and the importance of volunteering

Bring Habitat to Your Classroom

Habitat offers a hands-on program for primary and elementary schools, through which we will introduce your students to the tools used in house construction, and discuss Habitat's work to eliminate substandard housing here and around the world. Click here to learn about the program.

School Seniors on Site in Spring

Through Habitat's School Seniors on Site in Spring program, groups of high school seniors are encouraged to volunteer on the construction site during April, May, and June. Interested? Contact us through dwalker@rochesterhabitat.org, or call Diane Walker at (585) 546-1470, x304.

Fundraising Projects

The cost of constructing a simple, three-bedroom home is $65,000. Many classrooms choose to include fundraising in their involvement with the project. Some students conduct penny drives, some collect "Quarters for Quarters," others hold bazaars and bake sales. Students have made and sold hats, made videos on housing and homelessness, and held talent shows. Click here to learn how different schools are participating.

Make a Donation

Can you make a donation in support of the 2003 School HouseBuild? Checks made payable to 2003 School HouseBuild may be mailed directly to the Habitat office:
      Flower City Habitat for Humanity
      200A Public Market
      Rochester, NY 14609-6013
Or call the Habitat office at (585) 546-1470 to make a credit card donation.

Gifts In-Kind

Families in the school community have a special opportunity to offset the cost of construction by making in-kind donations. If you have a business that could donate materials or services needed in the construction of a Habitat house -- or you know someone who does -- your donation would be most welcome. Click here to learn more about in-kind donations.

Get Involved!

Committee Work

A steering committee coordinates the effort to involve over 200 local public, private and parochial schools in the 2003 School HouseBuild. Meredith Reiniger, a retired teacher, is leading the way. Want to get your classroom -- or your school -- involved? Want to participate in the wall-raising ceremony? ...the house dedication ceremony? Send Meredith an e-mail at Schoolhouse2003@aol.com.

Wrapping Up

Photo: Cobbles Presentation

With construction work nearing completion and the school year winding down, Meredith Reiniger visited the schools that supported this year's School HouseBuild with fundraising projects. She presented each school with a framed copy of Yasmine Jung's poster commemorating the project. These presentations gave students another chance to reflect on their contribution to an important community project, and on the life of a family that they had touched. The posters will hang in the schools as a visible reminder of their link to the work of Habitat for Humanity in their community.
