A Brush with Kindness
On June 30th, 2010 Flower City Habitat launched a new initiative called A Brush with Kindness.
A Brush with Kindness is Habitat's house-preservation initiative that focuses on minor porch and fence repairs, painting, weather-stripping and landscaping. It is part of Habitat's broader Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, and it will enable Flower City Habitat to offer a wider variety of construction services using the Habitat model.
Habitat for Humanity's A Brush with Kindness program has a goal of serving low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes. The work is done by volunteers who use materials purchased with a grant from local sponsors.
Homeowners may apply to the program at the Charles Settlement House, located at 445 Jay St., Rochester, NY 14611 in the JOSANA neighborhood, and must demonstrate need and willingness to partner. An applicant must be a homeowner and there must be a need for the construction services. This need may be determined by an inspection of the property, by local income levels, or by referral from the Charles Settlement House. Priority will be given to the elderly and disabled.
A Brush with Kindness will enable Flower City Habitat to:
- increase the number of families living in safe, decent, affordable housing
- increase the number of opportunities for our construction volunteers
- keep our sponsors engaged with additional opportunities for smaller projects
- enhance Habitat's broader Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative by developing cooperative relationships within the community
