Brown Street
The Brown Street Project is a $2.5 million, 40-home effort on Brown, Love, Silver and Taylor Streets in Rochester's southwest quadrant. FCHH became involved with the project with the construction of one house on Brown St. in 1998. We have since built 14 homes in the neighborhood.
Condemmed and abandoned workers' cottages are gradually being replaced by new, single family homes. New sidewalks, curbs and landscaping are transforming what was once one of Rochester's most neglected neighborhoods into a safe, thriving place to live.
The Brown Street project is a collaborative effort between the City of Rochester, FCHH, the Urban League (which has built 7 homes there) and Providence Housing, which has built several rental units.
It is in this area that we built our 100th house, at 52 Love St. The founder and president of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, was on hand to celebrate this milestone with us.
We will return to the Brown Street neighborhood to continue our work, as suitable vacant lots become available.
