Partnership to build homes for those with autism

The Autism Council of Rochester, Inc. has created a new partnership with Flower City
Habitat for Humanity to create a unique housing program for individuals and families
with children & adults living with Autism. This partnership is a first-of-its-kind in New
York State and its focus will be to remove barriers which prevent our families from fully
participating in homeownership, including the families in the build process and the
necessary accommodations for Sensory Needs Modifications, which may be a
challenge for individuals on the spectrum and possibly prevent them from being able to
enjoy their physical surroundings and comfort within their home.

The program currently has five applicants in the process.

"We are very excited about the new housing program and the steps being taken to
serve a vastly underserved group in our community. As a parent of someone living with
autism, I have first-hand knowledge of the challenges living situations can create on a
daily basis," said Lawana Jones, Founder & Executive Director of the Autism Council.

“We are truly gratified to be in partnership with the Autism Council of Rochester. We
look forward to providing homes that will allow each individual to be fully supported
and truly benefit from their living environment. We know the impact on our homebuyers
and their families will be a lasting one,” said Matt Flanigan, CEO, Flower City Habitat
for Humanity. “We look forward to continuing to work together to achieve our mission
of building homeownership, communities, and hope.”

Groundbreaking for the initial two homes in the program will begin in June 2019.

2019 RIT Framing Frenzy

We had a fantastic day with nearly 200 volunteers (over three shifts), 150 wall frames (for two five-bedroom, two-story houses), 60 hammers, and over 6,000 nails at the second annual RIT Framing Frenzy!

Thank you so much to all of the RIT volunteers and staff, and the amazing Habitat Hammer & Saw crew leaders who made this not only a day of great accomplishment, but of bringing partners together and enjoying our work together.

When we roll up our sleeves joyfully, we are building the world that we want to see - a world where we come together, and a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Stay tuned and stay involved as the frames for these houses head to Holworthy Street soon! Sign up for email updates at: https://goo.gl/forms/mf9aRRt0Uj2zfBZ63

JOSANA Neighborhood School #17 seeing major reduction in suspensions

We are proud to have contributed over 90 Habitat homes within a half mile of Enrico Fermi School #17 - with more under construction right now.

Quality affordable housing is often a major key to family stability (and improved student performance), but we also know it takes a holistic approach to have a great neighborhood.

In the JOSANA Neighborhood, School 17 is the hub that brings it all together. In addition to working with us, they work with dozens of community partners to bring quality affordable housing, access to services like an on-campus dental clinic, and much much more.

Here's another story of progress in JOSANA, as the school has reduced suspension days from 3,000 to 217, while increasing attendance and grades.

ESL to provide financial education program for Flower City Habitat

“Financial education builds the foundation for any homeowner,” said Malik Evans, Financial Wellness Manager, ESL Federal Credit Union. “Through education, homeowners can gain control over managing their finances so they can build their dream home. And while these classes provide a vital starting point, it is up to all of us to never stop learning and understanding how our finances impact our lives.”

Housing as a Social Determinant of Health: A Q&A with Epidemiologist Earle Chambers

Health and housing partnerships are rooted in evidence that improvements in housing can support physical, mental, and behavioral health. By studying health patterns and determinants at the community or population group level, epidemiologists can help expand results from health and housing partnerships to serve entire areas or groups with disparate health outcomes.
